Benchtops need to provide both function and beauty.

It’s good to think about the size of your benchtop first – the larger the benchtop, the more joins there will need to be. If there are a number of joins it’s a good idea to choose a material that joins together well so that the benchtop appears seamless.

Other things to think about include: how heat tolerant does your benchtop need to be? What level of stain resistance to you require? Will the benchtop scratch easily? And how easy is it to polish scratches out or disguise them if that’s an issue for you.

You also need to love the look of the benchtop, it forms a large piece of the overall look of your kitchen.

Of course budget is always a consideration. The price of different materials can vary widely.
